Recognizing figures through data on the bases

Una delle difficoltà più comuni dei collezionisti ed appassionati di figurini piatti è quella di riconoscere da dove proviene un certo pezzo: chi è il costruttore? chi è l'incisore ?
Molte indicazioni per rispondere a queste domande le troviamo incise sulla base, come una specie di targa automobilistica. Attraverso la forma della base e tramite le sigle che compaiono sulle basi delle figure, è possibile riconoscere il costruttore da cui sono sono state prodotte, l'incisore, il disegnatore, la serie, il numero di catalogo, ecc.
Non è sempre facile perchè spesso le sigle si leggono male (specialmente se coperte da vernice); oppure qualche volta le sigle sono del tutto mancanti all'origine (Es: Mignot, Biebel, Heinrichsen, ecc).
Generalmente, al centro compare la sigla del produttore (per esempio K per KILIA), ai lati le sigle dell'incisore e -qualche volta- anche del disegnatore. Sul lato opposto della denominazione del costruttore c'è di solito il numero di catalogo della figura; talvolta addirittura il titolo dell'incisione.
Comunque, non è una regola fissa, perchè la forma della base e la sua impostazione dipendevano anche dai vari incisori che ricevevano la commessa di una certa serie da parte di un Editore, per cui molti editori presentano basi di forme ed impostazioni diverse; in questi casi non resta che considerare il marchio dell'editore.

Una trattazione ed elenco molto completo di tutti i produttori ed incisori si trova sul libro "Sigel Bestimmungsbuch", di Heinz Schenzle, edito dal museo Plassenburg di Kulmbach.; il libro è del 1987, per cui non sono presenti gli Editori più recenti.

Nell'elenco che segue, diamo una lista delle tipologie di basi dei principali produttori, messe in ordine sparso, senza seguire alcun criterio nè alfabetico, nè di importanza. Tra le varie forme di basi di uno stesso editore, sono state messe quelle più tipiche.

La colonna "Attualmente" riporta il prodottore/distributore che attualmente ha gli stampi e quindi quello a cui ci si deve rivolgere per avere i pezzi. Dove non è riportata alcuna indicazione può volere dire o che non esiste più il produttore, o che gli stampi sono distribuiti presso molteplici produttori, oppure che non se ne sa più niente, oppure semplicemente che non è a mia conoscenza (sono gradite a questo proposito aggiunte e precisazioni da parte di chi ne sa di più)

One of the more common problems among flats collectors is the difficulty of recognizing a figure: who is the editor, who is the engraver?
Many informations can be found on the base of the figure, similar to a car numberplate: through the shape of the base and the signs engraved on the base it is possible to recognize the editor who produced the figures, the engraver, the designer, the series number, catalogue number, etc.
It is not always easy, because often the marks on the base are difficult to read (expecially if covered by a thick coating of paint); or, sometimes the signs are completely missing from the origin of production (eg: Mignot, some Biebel, Heirrichsen, etc).
In general, at centre of the base the mark of the editor appears: e.g.: 'K' for Kilia; at the sides of the Editor mark the signs of the engraver and (sometime) the designer. On the opposite half of the base, usually the catalogue or series number appears. Sometime the title of the engraving is marked too.
However there is no fixed rule, because the form and style of the bases were decided by the various engravers which got the order for engraving a set of figures and the Editors used different engravers. Usually the trade mark remained constant and this is the first thing to consider when examining a figure.

A complete description and list of all editors, engravers, designer is the subject of the book "Sigel Bestimmungsbuch", di Heinz Schenzle, edited by Plassenburg Museum of Kulmbach (German language only). This book was edited in 1987, therefore the latest Editors are missing.

In the list here attached the more popular Editors are mentioned; the list is random and no importance or alphabetical principle is adopted. Among different shapes of bases of the same editor, the more tipical are reported.

Under the column "Actually" you will find the editor which actually owns the moulds and therefore is the one to be addressed for figure orders. Where no indication is reported, it means that the editor does not exist any more, or the moulds have been distributed among several editors, or simply that no informations are available (additions and amendments from more informed people are welcome).
